Overview

Unpiloted aerial vehicles would seem to be covering our skies. UAVs, often called drones, have been used for years by the military and now are commonly available for commercial and personal use.

In fact, hobbyists have used fixed-wing UAVs for years, though they were often built from scratch. Today, owning a UAV is as simple as jumping on Amazon.com and punching in your credit card. For less than $1,500, you can buy a sturdy quadcopter and a high-resolution camera and have them flying over your neighborhood in a matter of minutes.

Parts of the government frown on this trend, particularly the Federal Aviation Administration, which has attempted to ban UAVs for what it deems are "commercial purposes" - including legitimate uses by journalists. UAVs have been banned across the country in national parks, and Florida and Idaho have passed laws banning their use by citizens under some circumstances.

Is the use of UAVs a personal freedom, or does it invade privacy? We will explore this divisive issue in the December.
